llLab. was established in 2015 by young architects from different countries who met and bonded while working for haascookzemmrich STUDIO 2050, a progressive German firm, and at the Institute of Computational Designin Stuttgart. Each drew on his experience of having worked with leading international firms, including SOM, Kengo Kuma Architecture and the Pritzker Prize-winning practice of RCR in Catalonia. Having agreed to collaborate, each designer returned to his home city—Luís Ricardo to Opporto, David Correa to Toronto, and Taichi Kuma to Tokyo, leaving Hanxiao Liu to set up the main llLab. office in Shanghai.

Many large architectural firms have opened satellite offices to supervise projects and solicit new commissions in far-flung locations, but it’s unusual to find a boutique firm that is focused on Chinese projects being led by partners on three continents. However, as Liu explains, he and Ricardo concentrate on practical issues, while their two colleagues undertake research into materials and construction methods that may later feed into the firm’s built work. These include large-scale robotic timber fabrication at the University of Waterloo in Toronto , and Bio-inspired 3D Printed Hygroscopic Programmable Material Systems. The interplay of craft and technology bodes well for the future achievements of this fledgling practice.

Though llLab. have designed some impressive urban structures, including a sleek glass pavilion on the Shanghai Bund, and a dramatic conversion of silos in Guangzhou, they’ve made their mark in rural locations, responding to nature and the vernacular. In doing so they join a growing number of Chinese firms who are regenerating remote settlements, encouraging residents to stay and tourists to contribute to the local economy. There’s a growing realization that villages and small towns, in China and around the world, are an endangered species as young people flee the drudgery of agricultural life for the bright lights and career opportunities of big cities. Old people cling to their familiar abodes or retire to their home villages, but they cannot sustain these communities by themselves. And it’s important to conserve the rich legacy of traditional Chinese architecture without turning these rural gems into tourist theme parks.

此前我曾介绍过DnA建筑事务所负责人徐甜甜的作品,她将乡土文化融入设计,在松阳县将近30个村庄打造了工作坊、社区中心等一系列公共设施。llLab.也在开展类似的乡村实践,其中就包括离北京两个小时车程、风景如画的北沟村。北沟村临近长城,交通便利,吸引了源源不断的游客就地旅宿,如若开发不当,当地的本土特色容易遭到毁坏。受到委托,llLab.开展了一系列尊重村落特色、尺度和肌理的实践,打造的”“叁舍乡情驿站”和“三卅”酒店度假村不仅让北沟村变得更有魅力,还为其他建筑师提供了乡村干预的借鉴。
In an earlier report, I described the work of Xi Tiantian who heads the Beijing firm of DnA and has enriched nearly 30 villages in Songyang County with workshops, community centers and other civic amenities that abstract the local vernacular. llLab. is pursuing a similar course, notably in the picture village of Beigou, a two-hour drive north of Beijing. Conveniently close to the Great Wall, it draws a steady flow of tourists to its many b&bs but unsympathetic development could easily destroy its character. That realization persuaded a group of residents to commission a succession of sensitive interventions from llLab. that would respect the character, scale and materiality of the village. Together these additions have greatly enhanced the appeal of Beigou and set an example for what others might do, here and elsewhere.

San Sa Village could be described as a rural oasis, a village within a village located on a 2000-square meter plot that was formerly occupied by a gas station. Visitors can feel as though they are part of the community while staying in two-story brick houses with pitched tiled roofs. These are tightly juxtaposed at angles to each other and open onto spaces that evoke the traditional courtyard. The simplicity of the forms plays off the irregularity of the composition and the varied patterns of paving. The architects employed locally sourced materials and the design evolved over several years as a collaborative effort, drawing on the varied talents of professionals and villagers. Though the spirit is authentically Chinese, there are affinities between these simple blocks and the rural vernacular of Portugal and Japan.

New Brickyard Retreat

瓦厂酒店(New Brickyard Retreat)的风格截然不同,原址为琉璃瓦厂,2010年改建成了酒店。2019年,llLab.接受委托改造现有的三座建筑,突出其历史意蕴和空间特点,采用了当地的红砖和琉璃瓦材料。这些工业建筑的原始饰面,再加上旧址窑洞,与远处的乡野美景和慕田峪长城互为衬托。曲面砖墙围合出一个露天泳池。整体设计古今交融,呈现了建筑丰富的历史层次感。
In sharp contrast to this residential complex is the New Brickyard Retreat, a former glazed tile factory that was repurposed as a hotel in 2010. In 2019, IILab. were invited to renovate each of the three existing buildings to heighten their historic and spatial character, employing local bricks and glazed tiles. The raw finishes of these industrial buildings, and especially the cave-like kiln, complement the beauty of the countryside beyond and the iconic presence of the Mutianyu Great Wall. Sensuously curved brick walls enclose an outdoor pool. Past and present converge, generating an appreciation of China’s multi-layered history.

Nostalgic Space

长城脚下的乡情驿站(Nostalgic Space)是一个简单的综合体,作为社区的聚集场地,村里的老人可以坐下来闲聊,和游客、年轻一代追忆往事。在建的瓦美术馆(WA Architecture and Art Museum)内部是一个红色和黄色瓷砖铺装的倾斜体块,以90度角和楔形门廊相切。大胆的倾斜设计和充满活力的色调展现了当地的文化特色,使建筑从周围的环境中脱颖而出,并与周边建筑相得益彰。llLab.再续北沟缘,为村民设计了朴素的房屋,以巩固村落未来的发展。刘涵晓说,“我们从村民那里学到了很多东西,并和他们成为了朋友。”
The aptly-named Nostalgic Space serves as a gathering place for the community, a simple complex of rooms where elderly residents can sit and gossip, sharing their memories with visitors and a younger generation. A fourth structure, now under construction, is the WA Architecture and Art Museum, in which a tilted block, clad in red and yellow tiles, intersects a wedge-like portico at a 90 degree angle. The bold angularity and vibrant tones of this showcase of local culture stand out from neighboring structures without overwhelming them. And the architects have continued their productive association with Beigou, designing several understated houses for villagers to cement its future as a viable entity. As Liu observes, “we’ve learned a lot from the villagers and many of them have become our friends.”

林隐泉野奢温泉酒店
Hidden spring spa

山西省玉村的林隐泉(Hidden Spring Spa)项目位于中国偏北部,llLab.通过改造为其注入了新的生命。设计团队修复了坐落在陡峭山坡的石拱形建筑,还新建了两个砖拱平顶凉亭。
Further north, in Shanxi Province, llLab. have breathed new life into the Hidden Spring Spa in Yu Village. This stone-arched structure, stepping up a steep hillside, was crumbling away; now the architects have restored the fabric and added two new pavilions with flat roof planes and delicate brick arches.

竹林亭台楼阁
Bamboo Bamboo, Canopy and Pavilions, Impression SanjieLiu

南方的桂林风景秀丽。在通往印象刘三姐园区露天剧院的路上,llLab.设计了一系列编制而成的竹亭。为游客精心准备的印象刘三姐演出位于漓江岸边的一座小岛,高低起伏的喀斯特山峰为演员、舞者和音乐家提供了天然的舞台背景。天黑后,竹亭犹如灯笼,为游客照明道路;下雨天,游客可到竹亭下避雨。在道路尽头,竹亭将天然竹林和人造景观连接起来,犹如天然雕塑。
And to the south, amid the spectacular scenery of Guilin, llLab. have created a series of woven bamboo pavilions and a canopy supported by their trunks on the access path to an outdoor theater. The Impression SanjieLiu in Yangshuo is an elaborately staged production for visitors on an island in the Li River. Actors, dancers and musicians perform against a backdrop of jagged karst peaks. The bamboo pavilions serve as lanterns to guide visitors arriving after dark, and the canopy provides shelter from rain. They mediate between the natural bamboo groves and the human spectacle at the end of the access path and serve as natural sculptures.
